Hello,

Thanks to Belmont Primary School, not only my two daughters but also I have had such a precious experience, so I would like to share some valuable information.

I am Sueyeon Ku, and I came here two years ago from Korea with my two daughters, who were in Year 5 and Year 6. 

When I think about why we chose this school, this area, and this country, my husband and I were looking for a safe place where our kids could walk to the mart and school without adult supervision. We wanted a place with mild weather that allowed for outdoor activities year-round, and since we came abroad to explore diversity, a place with few Koreans. Most importantly, we wanted a high standard of education, not only academically but also in terms of a variety of extracurricular activities. Belmont School in Auckland perfectly met all these criteria.

Two years later, if you ask about our satisfaction with the choice, I can confidently say it exceeds my expectations and, I believe, any expectations of those reading this letter.

Let me start by talking about the school. The Principal was one of the biggest reasons we chose this school. He remembers the names of kids who graduated years ago and enjoys assemblies, parties, and camp activities even more enthusiastically than the students. He genuinely loves children. Naturally, it feels like all the teachers and staff work in this profession because they truly love kids. 

Here, my daughters learned joy and coexistence through English. Most classes are not about one-sided knowledge delivery but are conducted in groups, requiring constant persuasion, negotiation, and compromise. They also read books to younger kids or helped take care of them. There are so many chances for the children to play with friends they weren’t usually close to. Watching my kids bounce with excitement on swimming days or waterwise days during class was a great joy for me as well. My daughter will never forget the day she fed milk to a lamb or the day she wrote with a puppy on her lap in the class.

I believe this also correlates with the school’s encouragement of sports. Throughout the year, a wide variety of sports activities are offered regardless of skill level. My daughters joined basketball, netball, rugby, and soccer teams, trying these sports for the first time in their lives. I also went to a soccer game for the first time, despite never even watching the World Cup before. I googled the word “netball” for the first time and watched rugby as well. However, now that we’re returning to Korea, the fact that my daughters won’t be able to continue these sports so easily at school is the saddest and most worrying part for us. They also enthusiastically participated in the choir, marimba band, and the graduation play. For a child who used to feel shy about standing in front of others, perhaps being in a group helped her discover the joy of performing on stage.

Finally, if you choose this school, let your child try any school activity they’re interested in, regardless of their skill level. With the enthusiastic support of teachers, other parents and friends, your child will take another step forward. Even if you don’t speak English well, try volunteering in school activities. I was honest about my English limitations with the teachers and participated in activities such as waterwise safety and driving. It’s a great opportunity to understand your child better and meet their friends and teachers naturally. 

I recommend a date with your children at Devonport Library. Borrow a book from this beautiful library, sit on a bench by the seaside playground, and read, surrounded by happy laughter. That ordinary moment may turn into an unforgettable treasure for life.

안녕하세요, BELMONT PRIMARY SCHOOL 덕분에 제 두 딸 뿐 아니라, 저 또한 너무 귀중한 경험을 하게되어, 소중한 정보를 공유하고자 합니다.

저는 2년 전, 한국에서 Year5, Year6인 두 딸과 함께 오게 된 구수연입니다..

이 학교, 이지역, 이 나라를 선택한 이유를 생각해보니, 우리 부부는 안전한 곳, 때로는 아이들이 어른 없이도 마트나 학교, 친구네 집도 걸어 다닐 수 있는 안전한 곳, 날씨가 온화해서 사계절 바깥 생활을 할 수 있는 친환경적인 곳, 다름을 찾아 해외로 왔으니 이왕이면 한국인이 적거나 없는 곳을 찾았어요. 그 중 제일 중요한 것은 높은 교육 수준이었어요. 아카데믹한 부분 뿐 아니라, 매우 다양한 그 외 활동들을 찾았구요. 이 조건들에 완벽하게 들어맞는 곳이 바로 여기, Belmont 지역이었고, Belmont 초등학교였어요. 

2년이 지난 지금, 우리의 선택에 대한 만족도를 물으신다면, 제가 했던 기대치보다 그리고 이 글을 읽으시는 분들의 그 어떠한 기대치보다도 높을 것이라고 단언합니다. 우선, 학교에 대해서 말씀드리면, 교장선생님? 제가 이곳을 선택할 수 있었던 큰 이유였어요. 몇 년 전 졸업한 아이들의 이름들을 일일이 기억하시며 불러주시고, Assembly, Party나 Camp에서는 아이들보다 더 신나게 즐기면서 아이들을 사랑하시는 분이세요.  당연히 ‘선생님들, 직원 분들 모두 진심으로 아이들을 사랑해서 이 직업을 하시는 구나’ 라고 느껴지고요. 책 읽어 주는 시간에 아이들에게 책을 읽어 주시다 선생님이 너무 우셔서 학생들이 달래주었다는 적도 있어요. 

이 곳에서 우리 아이들은 영어를 통해 즐거움과 공생을 배웠습니다. 대부분의 수업이 일방적인 지식 전달이 아닌, 그룹으로 이루어집니다. 끊임없이 설득, 조정, 타협을 해야하죠. 저학년 반에 가서 책 읽어주기, 동생들 돌봐 주기도 마찬가지구요. 모닝티 시간이나 점심시간에는 평소 친하지 않던 친구들과도 뛰어놀고요. 수업 시간 중, 수영이나 water wise 있는 날은 흥분해서 방방 뛰는 아이를 보는 모습은 저에게도 큰 기쁨이었습니다. 운이 좋아 어린 양에게 우유를 먹이고 온 날, 옆 반 선생님이 데리고 오는 강아지를 무릎에 앉히고 라이팅 한 날을 제 딸은 절대 잊지 못 할 것입니다. 

이 부분은 스포츠 장려와도 상관관계가 있는 것 같습니다. 사계절 동안 수준 상관없이 매우 다양한 스포츠 활동이 진행되요. 우리 딸들은 농구, 넷볼, 럭비, 축구 팀에 들어가 이곳에서 난생 처음으로 이 운동들을 시작했어요. 저 또한 월드컵도 보지 않던 축구를 처음으로 직관했어요. 넷볼이란 단어도 처음 구글링 해보았고, 럭비도 처음 봤지요. 그러나 지금은 한국으로 돌아가서 더 이상 학교에서 편하게 이 스포츠들을 계속할 수 없다는 것이 저도 제 딸 아이도 가장 걱정이고 슬프네요. 합창단, 마림바, 졸업 연극도 정말 재미있게 열심히 했어요. 사람들 앞에 서는 것을 너무 부끄러워하는 아이인데, 단체여서 가능했던 것인지 무대에서 공연하는 즐거움을 배운 것이죠.

마지막으로, 이 학교를 선택하셨다면, 아이가 흥미만 있다면 잘하든 못하든 상관없습니다. 학교 액티비니는 그 무엇이든지 시도해보세요. 선생님과 학부모들의 열 화와 같은 응원으로 아이는 한 걸음 더 나아갈 것입니다. 영어가 안되더라도 학교 활동에 많은 자원봉사를 해보세요. 저도 선생님께 영어를 못하는 것을 숨기지 않고, 제가 할 수 있는 워터와이즈 안전 요원과 운전 등을 했습니다. 낯선 곳에서의 아이를 더 이해할 수 있고, 친구들과 선생님을 자연스럽게 만날 수 있는 좋은 기회에요.
